The Vampire Injection

We begin our Halloween celebration.  For the month of October we’re focusing our attentions on the darker side of comics. This week we are discussing the Alaskan Vampire book 30 Days of Book.  A failed screen play, turned into a comic, then optioned for a movie.  Cause that’s how Hollywood works kids.

This yields 4 cocktails.  Cause why would you want to drink just one of these....or I guess you could have drinks with 3 friends...I don't play well with others.

  • 2 cups raspberries
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 4 oz vodka
  • 2 oz amaretto
  • 2 oz orange juice
  • 6 oz club soda
  • 4 plastic syringes

  1. Puree the raspberries in a blender or food processor. Press the puree through a fine mesh strainer to separate the pulp from the seeds. Discard the seeds.
  2. Combine the puree with the sugar in a small saucepan over medium high heat. Stir frequently and cook until mixture darkens and thickens, about 10 minutes. Chill until ready to use.
  3. Add vodka and amaretto to a shaker with ice and shake the shit out of it.  Stir in orange juice and club soda. Pour into iced glasses.
  4. Fill syringes with equal parts of the raspberry syrup and place in glasses before serving.
The Left Stump

The first book from the 2012 relaunch of the Valiant comics line.  This week we dig into XO Manowar.  Part Spartacus, part alien abduction story, with some Ironman sprinkled in.

  • 2 oz Apple Jack Brandy
  • 1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
  • I Teaspoon Sugar
  • Top off with soda water

Shake the Apple Jack, Lemon Juice, and Sugar together over ice and then strain into a glass.  Top off with soda water.

Todd is celebrating the loss of a limb with his cocktail this week.

Were back with another Batman book! Nearly every member of the rogue’s gallery gets involved in this week’s book: Hush, written by Jeph Loeb, with amazing art by Jim Lee.

Sugar cube soaked in bitters in champagne glass fill top Wilson Creek Almond Champagne (cause its from Adams Home town).

Bad Day At Work

Matt Fraction brings us a new take on Clint Barton - aka the self-made hero Hawkeye. With ex-Young Avenger Kate Bishop by his side, this thriller spans the globe. The stylistic art from David Aja and Javier Pulido brings Matt Fractions globe trotting romp to life.

1 cup sugar
1 ½ ounces Bluecoat or other high-quality gin
4 ounces clementine orange juice (from about 3 to 5 clementines)
Generous splash of seltzer

  1. Fill a tumbler with crushed ice and set aside.
  2. Make simple syrup: In a small saucepan, mix the sugar with 1 cup water. Simmer over low heat until sugar dissolves. Set aside to cool, about 5 minutes.
  3. In a shaker, combine the gin and orange juice with 1 teaspoon simple syrup. (Remaining syrup can be refrigerated for up to 1 week.) Shake well, and pour into the tumbler. Top with a splash of seltzer, add a stirrer and serve.

Ok, so I got this recipe form the New York Times.  So the making your own simple syrup thing may be a bit over kill. Especially if you truly have had a bad day and this cocktail quickly.

The Wings and Horns

A cross of Star Wars and Game of Thrones, this week we discuss Saga, from Brian K. Vaughn, and Fiona Staples.  A space opera that tackles everything from war, to parenthood.

4 cl (4 parts) White rum
3 cl (3 parts) Fresh lime juice
6 sprigs of Mint
2 teaspoons Sugar
Soda Water

Muddle mint leaves with sugar and lime juice. Add a splash of soda water and fill the glass with cracked ice. Pour the rum and top with soda water. Garnish and serve with straw.  To add a Saga Twist, add some melon liquor and garnish with two sticks of sugar cane to give it horns.
